Question/Answer session The below has the question in text form, with a link to the audio form. The answer is typically in audio form only. The audio should open in a new window, close that to return to this page.

1 Linda Carroll – There is a study in the late 70s/early 80s by Thomas Hixon that’s in his book on respiration in speech and song, in which he actually talks about the different physiology types – the barrel chested vs. the skinny and so on, and I think that what you are discovering is basically totally related. It is gender but it’s also physiology. Audio link.

2 Jeannie Lovetri– It’s my experience with my girls chorus that it has a lot to do with how athletic they are, and these are girls with ages 12 to 17. I find that the ones that are not so athletic and have not done upper body sports have a lot harder time breathing across the board. The other thing is that I have gained about 45 pounds in the past 3 years and I find that my breathing pattern is totally different at this weight, which I find amazing, because no one has taught me to change it; it just changed, and I find it much easier to support now than I did when I was thin. 3 Steven Austin – The percentages of change that you were noting in the singer, was that self reported, was there a measurement? Audio link.
