Lynn Helding recently joined the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music as Associate Professor of Practice in Vocal Pedagogy, after serving twenty-two years as Associate Professor of Voice and Director of Performance Studies at Dickinson College. Her diverse singing career has embraced both early and contemporary music, from oratorio, opera, operetta, music theatre, and the intimate venue of cabaret. Her "Made in America" art song tours took her around the world, from the United States to Italy, England, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, and Iceland.
Lynn Helding has emerged as a thought-leader on the dynamic scene of contemporary vocalism, spearheading the founding of the new non-profit Pan American Vocology association (PAVA), dedicated to advancing the scientific study of voice in all countries of the Western hemisphere. She is associate editor of the Journal of Singing and author of the column “Mindful Voice,” which illuminates current research in cognitive science, and is a popular lecturer on these topics at all the major voice symposia (National Association of Teachers of Singing/NATS, the Voice Foundation, and Physiology and Acoustics of Singing/PAS international conferences).
Lynn is also in demand as a guest master teacher throughout the United States and abroad. She teaches contemporary commercial (CCM) singing techniques in such diverse locales as the Summer Vocology Institute of the National Center for Voice and Speech (NCVS) in Salt Lake and the Next Step Prep Academy for Musical Theatre in Missoula, Montana.
Her early voice training began at the University of Montana, progressed to Vienna, Austria, and included numerous honors, most notably being one of the youngest semifinalists in the history of the Metropolitan Opera National auditions at that time. She was the first singer ever accepted to pursue the prestigious Artist Diploma in Voice at Indiana University, and earned her master’s degree in vocal pedagogy from Westminster Choir College of Rider University. In 2003, she completed the vocology program at NCVS and in 2005, was honored with the national Van Lawrence Fellowship, awarded to singers who have "demonstrated excellence in their profession as singing teachers, and have shown knowledge of voice science."
